How I did the text thing with Jim

I’ve had a request for a tutorial on how I did this thing here, so I’m going to tell you. It’s actually quite simple and I’m a complete hack and can’t believe I got so many notes on it.

Find a friend who’s willing to help you transcribe all the things. I realised a little bit after I was done with the graphic that we actually missed the bit in the courtroom with the gum, but SHH. Luckily, Jim only has about 15 minutes of screen time between the two series, so at least we didn’t have much to go through.
Find an image that you want to use as the background. Tweak the colours of the image so that it’s overly-saturated with really high contrast. You want it to look a bit bad, because you’re going to lose a lot of the image.
Create a new layer over top of your image and fill it either black or white on 100% opacity.
Create a new layer over top that and paste all of your text in the opposite of your fill (if you filled it black, use white, and vice versa). You may want to do a set of each, and see which looks better.
Merge the text layer down to the fill layer, so you have opaque text on an opaque background. If the background is BLACK, set the layer to MULTIPLY. If the background is WHITE, set the layer to OVERLAY.
Mess about with your background image some more until it looks good.
Post it to Tumblr and get all the notes! :D

The whole thing took me about a half hour, and most of that was getting the background image to look good under the text. I seriously cannot believe it got so much attention, so this is my way of saying thanks!
